The novel I chose to read was "The Help", Many don't know but Th Help was another word for house maids specifically African American maids. The story takes place in Jackson, Mississippi where abolition was a key element in that area. The main characters are Aibileen, Minny, and Skeeter. Throughout the novel we see two perspectives that of Skeeter's and Aibileen. The point of view of Skeeter we see house wives living a fantasy where they are giving everything in a silver platter but most importantly they don't know anything about the outside and find themselves ignoring their own children. In the other hand we have the pespective from "The Help" Where we see the poverty side of Mississippi and the day to day persecution they go through. We see "The Help" becoming almost second mothers to the kids they take care for. An example would be Aibileen and her care for Mae Mobley Leefolt and how she treated her as her own child.
From my point of view the theme of the novel is the idea of "Perspective", We see perspective play a major role in the novel. In the novel we have two perspectives that of white Americans and the black community. As a result of this two perspectives we see the flaws both communities have, but we also see them grow and ultimately fix their faults and become aware of the bigger picture surrounding the whole community.
The tone of the novel had three parts to it, It can be at time comical and informative but in many of the chapters text we sense a tone of sorrow because of the ongoing persecution the characters go through.
We see symbolism, tone, setting, imagery, and Mood in the novel. Symbolism would probably be the book depicting the society are in, Setting also helps reader establish the fact that abolition is a key factor of whats happening in that society during that time, Tone is a mix between comical, informative, and sad because the book contains all three elements throughout the whole novel. The mood establishes the overall mood and describes how and what situation each character is coming from. Imagery is seen in Jackson, Mississippi and the two divided communities the novel describes, both communities share each others hardships and almost similar situations they go through.
